HIV-1 Subtyping
Knowing the subtype of a patient's virus can provide useful information for treatment planning. Although subtype B is the predominant strain of HIV-1 in North America, non-B subtypes are becoming more prevalent. Knowledge of the viral subtype may be important for long-term treatment planning (drug sequencing), since non-B subtypes develop resistance through different mutational patterns than subtype B for most drugs. HIV-1 subtype is included with PhenoSense GT and GeneSeq HIV at no additional cost and is performed as a component of the genotyping process.
